ESPN the Mag details Gonzalez's final trek
By Vaughn McClure
Tony Gonzalez didn’t walk into retirement quietly. And maybe he’s not done just yet after all.
Gonzalez
The Atlanta Falcons' tight end had plenty to say while shadowed by ESPN the Magazine senior writer Seth Wickersham throughout the 2013 season. The masterful piece will appear on newsstands on Friday, and on the Web next week.
Here are some excerpts:
Regarding QB Matt Ryan, a close friend: "Matt's an excellent quarterback. But he's not elite. He's this close," says Gonzalez, placing his thumb near his index finger. "He'll get there, but he has some learning to do."
With the Oct. 29 trade deadline approaching, the Falcons were 2-5. Gonzalez met with coach Mike Smith and GM Thomas Dimitroff. He was careful not to ask for a trade, but he made it clear that he would accept one. Gonzalez told Seth later: "You trade me to a team that needs me, that wants to make a serious run in the playoffs and the Super Bowl. You get something in return for a guy who you know won't be here next year. And the season isn't going anywhere anyway. That's rational." At the trade deadline, Gonzalez sat at a restaurant with his wife and waited to hear which team it would be. When that call never came, he was not happy.
Despite all the drama and disappointment this season, Gonzalez consistently confessed that he isn't so sure about retirement: At dinner with Ryan one night, Gonzalez said, "Maybe, if the team is hot in November, 9-2 or something, I could come back for the last two months."
Bfff ojalá volviese...
@AG7 tú decías que alguna vez has seguido College Football, ¿no?
Me genera muchas dudas...
No conozco ningun jugador.
Competition committee discussing 43-yard extra point

The extra point has become the NFL's great afterthought. Could a substantial change be on the horizon?
NFL Media's Judy Battista reports the NFL Competition Committee is in preliminary talks about placing the ball at the 25-yard line for the point-after attempt. That would make the extra point a 43-yard attempt.
The ball is currently spotted at the 2-yard line, a 20-yard chip shot that was converted 99.6 percent of the time during the 2013 season. The kick was so automatic that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell floated the idea in January of eliminating the PAT entirely.
"There is no consensus yet," one member of the committee told Battista. "We could experiment in preseason, but we are not there yet."
Placing the ball at the 25-yard line would certainly increase the degree of difficulty for kickers. The conversion rate of field goals between 40 and 49 yards last season was 83 percent.
Those odds are still favorable, but it adds another layer of strategy for coaches who also have the option to attempt a two-point conversion. Teams that "go for two" are typically successful about 50 percent of the time.
Change is probably overdue. Kickers have never been better at their jobs than they are right now. These are skilled specialists who have outgrown the model. The game must evolve with the players.

Candidatos claros a SB ambos.
-Cortemos a nuestros receptores!!
@KiddGilchrist
EDIT: RECTIFICO
The Panthers have agreed to terms with former Saints safety Roman Harper, reports theCharlotte Observer's Joe Person.
The defending NFC South champions have been quiet during the first week of free agency, watching half their secondary leave for long-term deals elsewhere (safety Mike Mitchellsigned with the Steelers, cornerback Captain Munnerlyn signed with the Vikings).
Harper, 31, is a two-time Pro Bowler who played in only five games last season due to injury.
In 2012, when he started 16 games, Harper was one of the league's worst safeties, according to ProFootballFocus.com, ranking 87th out of 88 players. He was much better against the run than the pass, which explains why he's more comfortable closer to the line of scrimmage.
Still, the Panthers had some success with mid-tier free agents last offseason, and the hope is that Harper will follow suit in defensive coordinator Sean McDermott's system that fielded one of the NFL's best units.
