<<Aside from lightsabers, the thing that Jedi are most commonly associated with in the Star Wars universe is the Force. The concept of the Force was introduced in the original trilogy, but it was the prequel trilogy that revealed that the amount of midi-chlorians one has correlates to how Force-sensitive they are.
Because midi-chlorians are not as often mentioned in Star Wars as the Force is, they can be easily overlooked. However, the Force really wouldn't exist without them, and they are a fascinating and important aspect of the Jedi, worth taking a deep dive into. This YouTube video by GenerationTech has given a good outline for the six levels of midi-chlorian density, which this article will further explain.
Midi-chlorians are microscopic life forms living inside each being in the Star Wars universe. While everyone has midi-chlorians living inside them, some folks have a higher midi-chlorian count than others, which makes them immensely more powerful in the Force. The levels of midi-chlorians can range in person from 2,000 to 25,000.
To be categorized on the first level, or the "normal" level, of midi-chlorian count, one would need to have around 2000 - 2500 midi-chlorians per cell. A person with a midi-chlorian count this low would likely never experience a call to the force or realize any abilities. Examples of characters with this normal level of midi-chlorians would be Shmi Skywalker or Lando Calrissian.
The next tier is called "Marginally Force Sensitive," which applies to those who have around 5,000 midi-chlorians per cell. These folks have subtle Force sensitivities, such as being able to sense danger or sense another person through the Force. Two examples of heroes in this tier would be Han Solo and Finn. If Han were to have this slightly above average midi-chlorian count, it would explain why he was such an amazing pilot and sharp shooter. With Finn, his subtle Force sensitivity would explain why he was able to hold his own in his lightsaber duel against Kylo Ren with no training.
The third level of midi-chlorian density jumps into the 9,000-per-cell range. During the time of the Republic, standard blood tests were used on children to determine their midi-chlorian count. If a child was found to have a midi-chlorian count in the 8,000 to 9,000 range, they would be recruited to the Jedi Academy. Jedi with this level of midi-chlorians didn't usually engage in combat like the Jedi Knights did. They usually joined the service corps, engineering, medical, etc. An example of a Jedi at this level would be Jocasta Nu, the librarian of the Jedi Temple in the prequels. Though she wasn't well-versed in the art of combat, she was incredibly knowledgeable, and used her Force abilities to play to her strengths. Another example of characters in this midi-chlorian range would be Vader's Inquisitors.
The next tier of midi-chlorian density is the one that most people would hope to have -- the Jedi Knight tier. Jedi Knights typically have around 11000 midi-chlorians per cell. This is the elite class of Jedi Knights. The Grand Inquisitor is speculated to have had around 12,000. Plo Koon and Kit Fisto are speculated to have had around 13,000. Obi-Wan Kenobi is actually a great example of a Jedi with this level of midi-chlorian density. He had a midi-chlorian count estimated to be about 13,000. While this is a lot, it's definitely not as much as other Jedi. However, Obi-Wan is proof that your midi-chlorian count doesn't necessarily determine your success. He was able to defeat many opponents who had higher levels of midi-chlorians.
The fifth level of midi-chlorian density is the Jedi Masters. These, of course, are the most powerful Jedi who possess knowledge and abilities in the Force that not many others can match. Jedi Masters typically have around 15,000 midi-chlorians per cell, and this is generally accepted as the max midi-chlorian level. Examples of such masters would be Count Dooku, who is estimated to have 14,000, and Mace Windu, who is estimated to have 16,000.
The final tier of midi-chlorian density is called the "Chosen One" tier for obvious reasons -- Anakin Skywalker is in this tier. Anakin Skywalker is the only Jedi known to possess 25,000-plus midi-chlorians per cell, and explains why he was the Chosen One and so powerful. It is worth noting the other two Force-wielders who meet this criteria as well -- Darth Sidious and Yoda, both of whom were pushing 20,000 midi-chlorians per cell.
The Force and the midi-chlorians are one of the most fascinating, alluring and fun elements of the Star Wars universe. Discovering the six levels of midi-chlorians and how prominent characters fall into which levels provides more information when watching the movies. It is interesting to watch the films with the knowledge of each character's exact midi-chlorian count and Force sensitivity, and how that could determine their actions.>>
