I have thought of The Hobbit as it was thought to be read by young people.Also,you will have that base as to start reading The Lord of the Rings knowing many things,characters or places.

I haven't read anything in English beyond what I was told to read at school,so I can't really tell you what I would recommend.Actually,I will join you in that question

There are tons of very interesting podcast. Search in the BBC they have a lot of topics and if you like NBA or other American sports you have even more to choose.

You should stick to British shows if you want to improve, as their accent feature more nuances and subtleties, and their vocabulary is less Latin and more of a Germanic one. Besides, English accent makes the characters look twice as smart and evil. Hence, I watch American shows dubbed, but not the British ones.

This doesn't keep me from facing England when I go to pee, sure.

I recently found a youtube channel where you can find all the UK House of Common's sessions.Every video lasts for about 45 minutes and well,despite looking a bit boring I find it interesting,as deputies speak a very correct and fluent english and you can even distinguish some dialects when a scottish representative speaks.If only it had subtitles...
